Ian and Maggie are two people who spend most weeks passing like ships between night shifts and day shifts, finally landing in the same place at the same time. As a result, their rooftop proposal came together in about a week—and it was perfect.
And when the moment is right, you make it work. The rooftop of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library delivered exactly the kind of setting this moment deserved.

A Location That Fits Them
With Maggie working nights at the hospital and Ian working days at the Capitol, their schedules rarely overlap. Finding the perfect day and securing me as their photographer happened quickly in the narrow space between shifts.
Choosing where to propose is one of those decisions that says something about how well you know your person. Ian chose the MLK Library rooftop, specifically with Maggie in mind. At the time of the proposal, the library was relatively new to DC, and its renovation revealed a stunning rooftop garden that most people in the city hadn’t discovered yet. He knew she would love being one of the first to experience that space in such a personal way.
It also sits close to the coffee shop where they had their first date. There’s something intentional and quiet about choosing a place that holds the beginning of the story while writing the next chapter of it.
The weather added its own layer to their rooftop proposal story. The overcast sky turned everything cinematic — the wet pavers reflecting the light, the grasses holding their amber color against the grey, the glass buildings behind them catching the mist. After the yes, they didn’t rush anywhere. They stood together on the terrace, arms wrapped around each other, laughing into the grey morning.

What Makes This Rooftop Proposal Spot So Special
The MLK Library rooftop is an unusual place. It’s modern and a little wild at the same time — raised planters full of tall ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs, and late-season foliage running alongside clean architectural lines and rain-washed pavers. The city stretches out in every direction. You’re right in the middle of Chinatown, steps from busy 9th Street, and yet up on that terrace it feels genuinely removed from everything.
This space offered seclusion without requiring you to leave the city. The grasses create natural enclosures along the walkway, and the terrace’s layout means there are pockets of privacy even on a day when other visitors wander through. It’s a place that rewards the people who know how to look for it.

Testimonial
“My fiancé hired Lindsay for our engagement and she did not disappoint!! She was so kind and thoughtful and made us feel special. Our photoshoot was efficient, keeping us moving and giving instructions. Most importantly, the pictures we received were stunning! We got a preview batch of photos within a few hours of our engagement to share with our friends and family. The photos were natural, and the lighting was so romantic. Lindsay was 10/10.”
